First Shipment of SediMeters Made in USA
Miami, FL, 2008-03-03 - The SediMeter™, a unique instrument for monitoring erosion and sedimentation under water, is now for the first time being manufactured in America. The SediMeter was invented at Uppsala University in Sweden, but like so many other environmental monitoring solutions it is finding a bigger market abroad. Production has now started in Florida.
The first shipment went to Yamaguchi University in Japan. Besides the US, several Asian countries and Australia have in the past been good export markets for the European-built first version of the SediMeter.
The new American SediMeter model beats its predecessor on virtually every point, not at least the price. It is designed for higher volume production, and is intended for environmental monitoring. The old model was almost exclusively used in research applications.
The SediMeter sensor consists of an array of infrared backscatter detectors. By measuring the amount of light reflected from outside the sensor at every 10 mm, the bottom level can be determined with an accuracy of 1 mm, or 0.1 mm after calibration.
At the heart of this SediMeter is a little computer, the LogDator™. In spite of its tiny size (it fits inside a 1-3/4” tube) it features a user interface with a control stick and display, USB, an RS-485 industrial serial network port, and a card reader for MMC and SD cards. Not to mention the obvious: a processor, memory, and the analog signal processing circuitry.
A SediMeter can operate in stand-alone logging mode for years, but also in a network of several hundreds, connected to a computer on land that presents the results on the Internet in real time. Much thought has gone into making it user-friendly and cost-effective in as many different missions as possible. The inventor of this patented instrument, Dr. Ulf Erlingsson, put years of experience in using SediMeters into the design of the new version.
While the old SediMeter belonged to the niche of geoscience instruments, the new one is marketed for marine environmental monitoring. This has brought about a sea change that goes beyond instrument design and price. Other changes include providing advanced software for free, and sharing years of spill monitoring consulting experience on the Internet.
About Lindorm, Inc. - Lindorm, Inc. is a private company based in Miami, Florida, that in 2007 took over the R&D from Erlingsson Sub-Aquatic Surveys (Sweden), established 1989. Lindorm designs, builds, and sells the SediMeter™ and LogDator™.
