Sediment instrument for networked environmental monitoring
Miami, FL, 2008-11-03 - The SediMeter™, a unique instrument for monitoring erosion and sedimentation under water, has until now been priced out of reach for large scale monitoring. It has found uses in research and in specialized environmental monitoring, but has been too expensive for large-scale deployment. That may change now that the price has been dropped dramatically, so the network version only costs $2,490.
The SediMeter sensor consists of an array of infrared backscatter detectors. By measuring the amount of light reflected from outside the sensor at every 10 mm, the bottom level can be determined with an accuracy of 1 mm, or 0.1 mm after calibration.
The logger of the SediMeter™, called LogDator™, is also sold separately. The name comes from combining the Swedish words for “logger” and “computer”. Both instruments can be equipped with optional sensors, such as for measuring visible light, water depth, tides, or waves. They can also be connected in a network of up to 255 instruments sharing the same cable.
The price drop accompanies a change in the manufacturing of the sensor. Another advantage of the new sensor is that it can be deployed upside down, which leads to fewer disturbances of the water, and a higher turbidity accuracy. It can, of course, also be used in the traditional way with a holder tube screwed down into the bottom.
The very first SediMeter™ was built in a research project in Sweden in 1985. Later a commercial version came, still with a significant price tag. In 2007 the production was moved to the US, and a new version launched that was much improved, and much less expensive. The price cut now announced is not so much the result of design changes as of production streamlining, and made possible by the increased interest in the instrument.
