SediMeter SM2A
SediMeter SM2A

SediMeter™ with LogDator™

The sensor consists of 36 near infrared optical backscatter detectors (NIR OBS) spaced 10 mm apart. The active measurement length is 350 mm. Turbidity is reported in FBU (formazin turbidity units), and the level is estimated in the accompanying PC software with 0.1 mm resolution.

The built-in LogDator is the same as sold separately below, and has these features: USB, user interface with display, RS-485 slave and master network mode, MMC/SD memory card slot, and 2 MB built in memory for 4096 measurements.

The instrument is normally mounted in sediment using an anchor and holder tube. This holder is screwed down in mud and sand with the help of a handle. A metal tip can be used instead of the screw anchor to push the instrument into the bottom, in low energy environments. The sedimeter sensor also works upside down.

It has two channels for optional analog sensors, such as pressure and light sensors (contact us for special requests). The analog sensors can be sampled up to 84 times per measurement, at a rate of 0.5 - 50 Hz. A temperature sensor is standard.

The SediMeter can be equipped with UW bulkhead connector(s) and connected to a real-time RS-485 monitoring network. It can be used as a stand-alone logger, or for real-time monitoring via cable, alone or in a daisy-chained network. Requires 2 AA 3.6 V batteries (not included) or a cable to external power.

SediMeter SM2A

SediMeter™ kit

Above instrument with everything needed for mounting by diver or snorkeler

This kit is based on the SM2A instrument, and includes a screw-down anchor, holder tube, handle, batteries, software, USB cable, memory card, and a case. The screw anchor can be used in sand as well as in mud, and will hold the instrument firmly even in high energy environments, unless the erosion goes too far.

The watertight storage and transportation case provides protection against mechanical and thermal shock. It has two handles, and wheels on one end so it can be pulled like a cabin bag. A pressure release valve automatically releases the overpressure during air transport. The components are packed in two layers inside.

SediMeter SM2N

SediMeter™ Network Sensor

For real-time sediment monitoring or logging with separate LogDator™

Made for remote operation by cable. It features one RS-485 underwater connector for real-time monitoring or remote logging on a LogDator™. Power is supplied through the cable. Although intended as a sensor it can also log up to 4096 measurements on internal memory, that can be downloaded to a computer through the cable. One bulkhead underwater connector is standard.

A cable with an underwater connector is required for underwater use. If more than one instrument is used in a network, all instruments except the last must have a second UW connector. They can be used in real-time mode using a PC that must have either an RS-485 adapter or an RS-485 port. They can also be used in network logging mode, controlled by a LogDator (LD-02-00, below) or a SediMeter with display (SM2A, above).

LogDator LD0-UW2 with options

LogDator™ Under-Water Logger

The LogDator™ can be the master data collection logger in an RS-485 network with hundreds of connected SediMeters or other LogDators. It can also collect data from directly connected sensors, work as a stand-alone logger, and be a slave in a network.

This is the same logger as in the SediMeter™ SM2A (it just lacks the patented sedimeter sensor). It includes a built-in thermometer, and can be equipped with optional pressure, light, and other sensors. It requires an optional bulkhead connector to be used in an underwater RS-485 network.

From firmware revision 2, data from off-the-shelf optional sensors is converted to physical units in firmware rather than software. The calibration coefficients can be reprogrammed at any time via USB or RS-485.

As in the SediMeter, the analog channels for optional sensors can be sampled in bursts of up to 84 values per sample, at a rate of 0.5 to 50 Hz. This allows wave periods to be estimated in the SediMeter PC software, and quite precise averages can be estimated even from inherently noisy sensors.

LogDator Buoy

LogDator™ Buoy Logger

In the top of the buoy there is a LogDator logger, which can record data from up to 250 SediMeters and LogDators, on a SD/MMC memory card of up to 2 GB capacity. The network is powered from a 2.5 Ah, 8 V lead-acid battery, which is kept charged by the 6 W solar panel.

The logger is accessible be lifting off the o-ring sealed top of the tube. Just like the SediMeter SM2A, this LogDator has a user interface with display, so that it can be set up in the field without the need for a computer. Regular retrieval of data is done by exchanging the memory card.

And just like the SediMeter, it can take two optional sensors and sample them up to 84 times per measurement, at a rate of 0.5 - 50 Hz. This allows for vastly improved statistical analysis compared to typical environmental measurements with long intervals, by allowing higer precision averages, analysis of cyclical phenomena, and analysis of auto-correlation.

The LogDator can be equipped with either a sensor for relative humidity or for atmospheric pressure, both including air temperature sensors. It can also be equipped with a water temperature sensor at the base of the tube. Sampled once per measurement, its data replaces the measurements from the internal thermometer (that is used in the SediMeters).

A short cable with an under-water type connector for hooking up the instrument network is included. Alternative floatation bodies with a central hole can be used, depending on anchoring requirements.
