Memory Cards

The SediMeter (and LogDator) are designed to use standard capacity MultiMedia Cards (MMC). Many SD cards are compatible with MMC hosts, and we found cards that worked well. Since MMC cards have become harder to come by we replaced them with SD cards. However, recently we have received reports that the SD cards, even though they appear to mount and work, will malfunction in the device after a while, resulting in loss of data.

Solution

A workaround in a stand-alone instrument is to record to internal memory instead. A permanent solution is to use a standard size MMC card. We have now stocked up on the same card we originally offered, 128 MB standard MMC, which is larger than will ever be needed with the standard battery capacity. We will replace at no charge any SD card we have delivered with one one of these MMC cards.

Background: The MMC standard is free, but to accept SD cards one has to pay a yearly fee. Therefore the design calls for, and will continue to call for, MMC cards. The preferred type is the full size card. 128 MB is sufficient in a stand-alone unit, since the batteries will run out before a larger card gets full. All computer card readers that can read SD cards can also read these MMC cards.
