The third generation SediMeter™ was designed in 2013 as a no-frills, mission-focused instrument, featuring both internal data logging and the capacity to act as a sensor in a monitoring network. It has 36 NIR backscatter detectors 1 cm apart, plus a 37th OBS detector 11 cm above number 36. The SM3 is brought back in production in 2022 in its permanently sealed straight tube form, with a minimum order quantity of 3, intended for evaluation of the sensor technology at the project preparation stage.
As in SM4, the sensor measures both direct backscatter (180 degrees) and oblique scatter (about 90 degrees). This helps discerning if the reflection comes from the sensor surface, from turbid water, or if the sensor is above water. The instrument also reports temperature and battery voltage at each measurement.
The instrument can be mounted in sediment using an anchor and holder tube. The holder is screwed down in mud and sand with the help of a handle. These accessories are optional when buying the 3xSM3 kit (handle, anchor, holder tube, carrying case), as only the three instruments themselves and one USB charging and communication cable is included.
